After studying biology at the Central Methodist College, Fayette, Missouri, Marvin graduated and spent the next eleven years as an Explosive Ordnance (Bomb) Disposal Officer in the US Army.

After Leaving the Army, Marvin worked for thirteen years as a Radiation Safety Officer with a Uranium Mill in Central Wyoming, where he was responsible for Employee Radiation Protection.

His Interest in Fly Tying began in 1974 and in 1983 Marvin started to dress flies professionally, and has been full time since 1993, specialising in antique flies of all types, particularly classic salmon flies.

Over the years, Marvin has contributed articles on fly tying to various magazines on both sides of the pond. He was an author of An Introduction to Aquatic Insects, a booklet about Aquatic Entomology for Fly Fishers, authored two chapters in Tying the Classic Salmon Fly edited by Michael D Radencich, was one of twenty three tiers from the US, Canada, Europe and Japan featured in The Atlantic Salmon Fly by Judith Dunham. Marvin tied all the flies featured in Spinners by Sylvester Nemes.

In 1995 Marvin was the recipient of his nation's highest award for fly tying, the Federation of Fly Fisher's Buz Buszek Memorial Fly Tying Award, a just reward for someone who has so much talent in both tying and demonstrating.

At home he has conducted courses in Fly Tying and Aquatic Entomology from beginner to the very advanced. His demonstrations and workshops have taken him as far a field as Denmark, England, Holland and Scotland.

One of Marvin's greatest Fly Tying achievements to date has been the selection and dressing of the largest collection of framed classic salmon flies in the world, The Grainger Collection, some 342 flies in total taking him five years to complete.
