Rules and Regulations
ELIGIBILITY:

1.These Championships are open to all fly-tyers, both professional and amateur. Anyone interested in the art and craftsmanship of Flytying may enter whether resident, or non-resident of Ireland. Members of the jury or the jury’s family may not participate.
There will be an “Irish Open Expert Champion”, and an “Irish Open Amateur Champion. The “Irish Open Expert Champion”, will be the competitor who accumulates the most points in the Expert category, while the "Irish Open Amateur Champion" will be the competitor who accumulates the most points in the Amateur category.

2. You can participate in one of the following two classes: a. Expert, or b. Amateur.

Expert: A fly dresser who has won a medal in any national/international flytying competition, or who has sold flies professionally.

Amateur: A fly dresser who has never won a medal in any national/intrnational flytying competition and who has never sold flies comercially.

3. Examples of each specified fly will be available on the Irish Angler web site;

4. Deadline for receipt of flies. April 30th, 2011.
The entry fee is €15 £12 $20
Cheques, postal orders or drafts made payable to Irish Angler Publications Ltd.

5. Each participant may enter only one fly per category for a total of 6 flies.
The original pattern for each fly is given. Substitute materials will be accepted.
All flies are sent at senders risk.

6. Entrants should ensure that they supply the following with their entry;
Your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.

Entry class: Expert or Amateur
Entry fee. €15, £12, or $20.

For the creation category;
The sizes of the hooks for the compulsory patterns are specified. The make of hook is up to the entrant to choose.

All flies entered to the competition automatically become the property of “Irish FlyFishing & Game Shooting Museum”.

Each participant will receive;

1. email verifying that we have received their flies; and after the jury have judged the flies,
2. A result list sent by e-mail or regular mail;
3. An email/regular mail of written feedback on their entry.

Flies must be properly packaged to protect them from damage in transit. You should write “ Fishing Flies ” for the contents of the package and add “ No Commercial Value ” on any declaration form, especially if your entry is coming from outside of the European Union.

FLYTYERS MAY PARTICIPATE IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES:

Please note that in the creation categories, we are looking for more traditional styled patterns, while in the freestyle categories you may be more adventurous in your creations

EXPERT:

SALMON FLY: Fully Dressed. ‘Thunder & Lightning’
SHRIMP FLY: The Bann Special.
Trout Wet Fly: The Kingsmill.
Trout Dry Fly: Dunne's Panama;Tying the Panama
Creation salmon fly.
Freestyle pattern: A saltwater pattern of your own choice, style, hook size, etc.

Amateur:

SALMON FLY: Hair wing. ‘The LaRi’
SHRIMP FLY: The Tummel Shrimp.
Trout Wet Fly: Tye's Summer Olive.
Trout Dry Fly: Malone's Daddy
Creation: Salmon fly. A hair wing pattern.
Freestyle pattern: An Irish lough pattern of your own choice, style, hook size, etc.



REGULATIONS CONTINUED

PRIZES: For each category of the Championship, three medals will be awarded: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Participants that are placed in the top ten in each category will each receive a diploma signed by the panel of judges, in recognition of their great achievement. Winner’s flies will be photographed and presented in Irish Angler magazine and on our web site.

WINNERS:
Winners and runners-up will have their prizes presented at a suitable venue. Overall Championship winners will receive a special valuable prize in addition to their framed certificates, while all other participants will have the chance to win some randomly drawn spot prizes (Fly-fishing magazine subscriptions, flytying materials, etc.)

JURY MEMBERS:
The jury will consist of three people involved in different fields of fly-tying;

Peter Dunne. FQSA Master, MSO Gold medallist.
Mike Shanks. FQSA Master. Irish Angler Magazine.
Peter Kealey. Former All-Ireland champion. MSO medallist.

All of the specified fly patterns will be pre-tied by experts and submitted for viewing on our web site. This will encourage participants who may be unfamiliar with Irish fly patterns, (their tying style, form, and the rich colour blends used, etc) to study these examples with the utmost confidence, in the knowledge that the patterns displayed are tied as required.
This Championship is intended for flies as exhibits rather than flies for fishing. Thus the judges will consider the measure of, the aesthetic qualities in each entry, the appropriate use of materials and the respect of fly-tying methods, techniques and principles.
Be advised that the rules and regulations must be followed to the letter, and any departure from the statutory provisions of the Championship, will automatically lead to elimination.

MISCELLANEOUS

a) For all enquiries about the Championships, write to Irish Angler, and we will send you a competition package containing all the necessary information. b) All flies received will be exhibited at the Museum on Open Day.
c) All winning flies and flies that receive a special mention will be framed and kept in the collection of ‘Irish Fly Fishing & Game Shooting Museum'. This collection will be shown at various national sporting/fishing events here in Ireland, and on pre-appointed exhibition days, in the Museum itself.
d) All other flies will be auctioned off at various charity fund raising events. e.g. “Conquer Cancer Campaign” etc.
e) Results and photos of winning flies will be published in Irish Angler magazine; also, photos of the winning flies will be posted for viewing on the following web address. www.irishangler.ie and on www.irelandflytying.com

SPECIFIED PATTERNS: (expert)(Amateur)

All flies submitted to these categories must be tied in accordance with the style, anatomy, proportions, particulars and materials instructed in the reference books. Excellent examples of these flies will be available on-line for study as necessary. The participant must present only one fly for each compulsory pattern.
The more categories you enter the more points you accumulate. Once more, the participants who accumulate the most points in the Expert and Amateur categories will be declared the champion of their respective category.
